Students must have a minimum grade of C or better in every course that applies to the Vocational Nursing Certificate plan to graduate.
In accordance with the mission of LSCPA, VNSG 1462 Clinical assists the student to develop the particular skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for success as a vocational nurse. Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

The grade is determined as follows:

Because each facility may not have an opportunity available to all students to obtain every objective, the objectives obtained by the student will be averaged together for the remaining 60% of the clinical course grade.

Dosage Exam: The student must pass a medication administration competency
(Dosage) exam with a minimum score of 90. The student will have three (3) opportunities to pass the exam. Students who do not achieve a minimum score of 90 on the third dosage exam will not be allowed to continue in course VNSG 1463 and will be unable to complete required clinical objectives. Therefore, the student will be unable to successfully pass the course. The students’ Dosage Exam grade for VNSG 1463 will be averaged by the number of attempts taken to pass the test. i.e.: 1, 2 or 3. All assignments must be turned in with the rubric attached

Students must have a 75 average and a satisfactory rating on the clinical evaluation tool to pass the course.
If the student is unsuccessful in the VNSG 1463 course they are required to repeat VNSG 2410, VNSG 1463 and VNSG 1230
Check-Off Mastery -Check-Off Mastery of clinical skills is a foundational requirement for success in this course and the nursing profession. To ensure students are adequately prepared for safe and effective patient care, the following guidelines apply to clinical skills practice and evaluation:
Students are required to attend and actively participate in all scheduled clinical skills practices, check-off sessions, and/or skills makeup sessions.
Students are required to be prepared for skills. Preparation for skills includes reviewing course materials, watching assigned skills videos, and practicing in the lab. All skills are subject to co-requisite course testing material.
All students must successfully pass required clinical skills checkoffs prior to participating in clinical rotations. If a student is unsuccessful on a skills check-off, the student is required to attend the scheduled open lab/skills remediation day for additional practice. During this time, the student must complete practice of the unsuccessful skill and obtain two peer check-offs demonstrating satisfactory performance. After successful completion of the required peer check-offs, the student will complete the second attempt check-off with an instructor during the scheduled open lab/remediation session. A failure to pass the required skills will result in the inability to advance to the clinical portion of the course. Students who are unable to advance to clinicals due to failure in meeting required competencies may be unable to meet course requirements, which could result in course failure.
This policy is designed to uphold the safety of patients and the integrity of the nursing profession. Students are encouraged to utilize available resources, including scheduled practice sessions, instructor feedback, and skills lab materials, to ensure competency and success.
Students attending classroom, lab or clinical sessions virtually should exhibit appropriate etiquette to include at a minimum: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life; Respect faculty and peers time by being on time to scheduled exams, sessions, and activities; and present yourself in a professional manner.
Students should respect the instructor’s office hours of M-F 0830-1530 (unless an emergency arises) and understand that cell phones are used to contact the instructor during clinical hours only for clinical purposes. All other means of communication will be through the Lamar email system.
Should the student be unable to maintain these expectations or stated program requirements, dismissal from the program may occur.
1. Schedules may be changed at the discretion of the faculty and VN nursing coordinator. All attendance policies are in effect regardless of the setting. Students should check their emails and blackboard daily to ensure changes have not been made.
2. Attendance at all scheduled classes and clinical experiences is expected. Research has shown that consistent class and clinical attendance contribute to successful completion of not only the Vocational Nursing Program but also pass the NCLEX PN/VN. Regular attendance is an essential function of any job in nursing. Students who regularly miss class or clinicals clearly demonstrate their refusal to be accountable to report to work regularly.
a. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor prior to any absence from class or clinical. If the student misses a clinical day, they must notify the faculty that they cannot attend clinical. Each clinical instructor will provide contact information for the student to reach their clinical instructor; the student can call and leave a message if the instructor does not answer. If the student is unable to contact the instructor, the student should call 409-984-6356 or 1-800-477-5872, ext. 6356, and leave a message. Also, the student may email their clinical instructor.
b. Clinical Orientation is MANDATORY for all students. Students who do not attend clinical orientation may not be allowed to attend clinical and may be dismissed from the program.
c. A student absent from course activities for more than two (2) days without notification to faculty may be dropped from the program by the Program Director.
d. Any student who is a “no call, no show” for clinical demonstrates a lack of accountability and unprofessional conduct. Therefore, the student may fail clinical that semester and must repeat both the clinical and didactic courses to progress in the program. The only possible exception is if the student is physically unable to contact the faculty. A student is “No call no show” if the student is absent from clinical and fails to contact the instructor before the scheduled arrival time for clinical.
3. Students must be present the entire clinical day to receive credit for their attendance.
4. Students may be required to attend seminars or workshops to meet clinical objectives. Students will be informed in advance of the requirements. They are expected to attend the entire workshop as scheduled even if it extends past the regularly scheduled clinical time.
5. The clinical instructor keeps an attendance record. Any student unsure about their status should meet with the instructor by appointment.
6. Students are expected to attend clinical in FULL CLINICAL ATTIRE, including approved clinical dress (scrubs, scrub caps, appropriate shoes, lab jacket, name badge and photo, etc.) and required accessories. This includes keeping the “Clinical Portfolio” on hand for all clinicals, simulations, evaluations, and checkoffs. Badge and photo must be worn on the top right-hand side of the uniform. All students and faculty may be required to wear an approved surgical face mask/N95 and must follow each facility’s screening process when entering the clinical facilities.
Students and faculty may be required to wear a face shield while in patient care areas (including nursing stations etc.) and while providing direct patient care or according to facility/LSCPA’s current policy. These policies are updated regularly and may change throughout clinical.
Students not adhering to dress codes; as described in Student Handbook, the syllabus, or the facility may be sent home by the instructor. This will count as a clinical absence.
7. Since clinical is such an important component of the VN Program, students must attend 100 percent of the scheduled clinical days in any given semester. An assignment will be required if the student is absent from clinical. ALL assignments must be completed satisfactorily and are required for all make up work to be counted for missed clinical time. The additional assignments for missed clinical days will not be counted towards the clinical grade average.
8. Assignments for absence(s) are listed in blackboard course VNSG 1463 under the clinical assignments tab. The student must follow instructions very carefully when submitting their assignments or it may result in a (0) zero.

11. Simulation/Computer Lab Assignments are mandatory. Failure to attend will result in a zero (0) for that assignment and the student being sent home with a clinical absence.
12. The Program Director or Department Chair has the right to initiate the administrative withdrawal of any student whose attendance, conduct, scholastic abilities, attitude, or lack of aptitude for Vocational Nursing makes it inadvisable for the student to continue in the program.
