This course provides corequisite support for the application of algebraic functions—including polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions—to problems in business, economics, and the social sciences. Topics include simple and compound interest, annuities, systems of linear equations, matrices, linear programming, probability, and expected value. DMTH 0124 must be taken with MATH 1324 during the same semester or part of term.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

• Apply elementary functions, including linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and exponential functions to solving real-world problems.
• Solve mathematics of finance problems, including the computation of interest, annuities, and amortization of loans.
• Apply basic matrix operations, including linear programming methods, to solve application problems.
• Demonstrate fundamental probability techniques and application of those techniques, including expected value, to solve problems.
• Apply matrix skills and probability analyses to model applications to solve real-world problems.

Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and/or visual communication.

Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

SD = Pass

UD = Fail

Your Pass/Fail status for this course will be tied to your performance in MATH 1332.

A passing grade in MATH 1332 will earn you a passing mark (SD) in this course.

Likewise, a failing grade in MATH 1332 will earn you a failing mark (UD) in this course.

Purpose of the Corequisite

This DMTH corequisite provides additional academic support for students enrolled in the corresponding MATH course. Class activities focus on the concepts, skills, assignments, and questions arising from that course. The corequisite does not replace attendance, participation, or completion of required work in the corresponding MATH course.

Concurrent Enrollment

Students must remain enrolled in the corresponding MATH course while enrolled in this corequisite. A student who is not enrolled in the correct MATH course should contact an academic advisor immediately.

Withdrawing from either course may affect enrollment in the other. Students considering a withdrawal should speak with the instructor and an academic advisor before making changes to their schedules.

Corequisite Grade

The corequisite is graded on a pass/fail basis. The final corequisite grade is determined by the student’s final grade in the corresponding MATH course. A student who successfully completes the corresponding MATH course will receive a passing grade in the corequisite. A student who does not successfully complete the corresponding MATH course will receive a failing grade in the corequisite.

The surveys, discussions, and in-class support activities do not create a separate set of mathematics assignments or assessments.

Blackboard and Course Orientation

Blackboard is the primary location for corequisite information, announcements, weekly AMA Surveys, discussion boards, and support resources. Students should check the Blackboard course regularly.

Students must begin with the Corequisite Orientation module and complete the Orientation Quiz to access the remaining course content. Students are responsible for reporting access problems promptly and documenting technical difficulties with screenshots when possible.

Weekly AMA Surveys

A weekly AMA Survey will allow students to submit questions, identify difficult topics, request particular types of assistance, or indicate that they do not need help that week.

Surveys are private between the student and instructor. Individual students will not be identified when submitted questions are discussed. Students may paste or describe homework problems but may not submit questions from an active quiz or examination.

Weekly surveys are generally due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Responses will help determine what is reviewed during the following week’s corequisite class. Questions submitted after the deadline may be carried forward to a later class meeting.

In-Class AMA Support

The face-to-face corequisite functions as a weekly AMA and support session for the corresponding MATH course. Class time may be used to:

• Address questions submitted through the weekly AMA Survey
• Review difficult concepts or common mistakes
• Work additional examples
• Provide homework or calculator assistance
• Prepare for upcoming quizzes and examinations
• Reinforce prerequisite skills when needed

Students may also ask questions during class even if they did not submit them through the survey. The instructor may adjust the planned agenda based on the needs of the class and the pacing of the corresponding MATH course.

Attendance and Missed Classes

Regular attendance is expected. Because the face-to-face corequisite emphasizes individualized help, guided practice, and responses to current student questions, the support provided during a class meeting may not be duplicated elsewhere.

Students who miss class remain responsible for:

• Announcements and schedule changes
• Support material covered during the meeting
• Deadlines in both Blackboard courses
• Assignments and assessments in the corresponding MATH course

Missing the corequisite class does not automatically extend a deadline in the corresponding MATH course. Students should check Blackboard and contact the instructor if they need clarification about available support.

Student Questions and Discussions

Blackboard contains a General Questions and Answers board and chapter-specific student help boards. Students may use these discussions to ask questions, compare strategies, explain concepts, and help one another outside of class.

Participation is voluntary, and anonymous posting is permitted. When responding, students should explain their reasoning rather than provide only an answer. Students may not post:

• Questions from an active quiz or examination
• Grades or other private educational information
• Personal information that should be discussed privately
• Content copied from another person or unauthorized source

Student responses may contain mistakes. Students should evaluate the reasoning carefully and ask for clarification when necessary. Questions concerning an individual grade or personal circumstance should be sent directly to the instructor.

Communication and Requests for Help

Students may request assistance during class, through the weekly AMA Survey, through the appropriate discussion board, during office hours, or through the instructor’s contact method listed in Blackboard.

When contacting the instructor directly, students should include their full name, DMTH course section, and corresponding MATH course. Students should seek assistance before falling significantly behind. Messages sent shortly before an assignment deadline may not receive a response before the work is due.

Academic Integrity and Appropriate Assistance

Students are encouraged to use instructor support, tutoring, course materials, and class discussions to strengthen their understanding. However, all work submitted in the corresponding MATH course must follow that course’s academic-integrity and authorized-assistance rules.

Students may not share assessment questions, request or provide answers to active assessments, submit another person’s work, or assist another person in violating course rules. Suspected violations will be handled according to college academic-integrity procedures.

Changes to the Support Schedule

Class activities, survey deadlines, or planned topics may be adjusted to meet student needs or accommodate changes in the corresponding MATH course. Changes will be announced in class and posted in Blackboard. Students are responsible for checking course announcements regularly.

Attendance Policy

Regular attendance is expected because this course provides in-person support for the corresponding MATH course. Class meetings include responses to student questions, additional examples, guided practice, review of difficult concepts, and preparation for upcoming assessments. The support provided during a particular meeting may not be duplicated elsewhere.

Attendance will be recorded at each scheduled class meeting. Students who arrive after attendance has been taken should notify the instructor at the end of class so the attendance record can be corrected.

Students who miss class remain responsible for announcements, support material covered during the meeting, and all assignments and deadlines in the corresponding MATH course. An absence from the corequisite does not extend a deadline or excuse missed work in that course.

The final corequisite grade is tied to the student’s final grade in the corresponding MATH course; therefore, absences from the corequisite do not independently produce an automatic failing grade. However, regular attendance is strongly encouraged because failure to use the available support may make successful completion of the corresponding MATH course more difficult.

Students who stop attending or are considering withdrawing from either course should contact the instructor and an academic advisor. Withdrawal from one course may affect enrollment in the other.

The syllabus may be updated, as needs arise, throughout the semester. Any major changes will be accompanied by an announcement on Blackboard.
