Basic Milling Operations

Milling Machine: A machine tool that moves the table up & down, side to side, and in & out. It is used to drill, tap, bore, and above all cut keyways, by moving a cutting tool into a piece of material that is held stationary in a vice or bolted down to the table. An introduction to the common types of mills. Emphasis on safety, basic parts of the mill, nomenclature, mill operations, machine maintenance, blueprint reading, different types of tooling used, also feeds and speeds of the different tooling.

After completing this unit, the student should be able to :
Identify mill components and controls and explain their functions.
Demonstrate safe mill operation using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and shop safety procedures.
Set up a workpiece correctly using chucks, vises, and clamp down bolting as work-holding devices.
Select and install cutting tools appropriate for the material and machining operation.
Calculate and set spindle speeds and feed rates for basic milling operations.
Learn basic mill operations, including:
Maintain equipment and work areas following standard shop practices.

As class attendance is crucial to making a passing grade, after 5, 7, & 9 class periods have been missed; a letter grade will be dropped after each and after 11 missed class days a failure will be recorded for the overall grade. After the class period begins, you will be counted tardy unless there is a recognized excuse.
Sleeping in class will be discussed in an after class meeting with me. Class absences can also have recognized excuses, with each being handled on a one on one basis with your instructor.
Do not forget that attendance is 20% of your grade
Student Success
Success is not given; It's Earned !!! Expect to spend at least twice as many hours outside the class as you do in class studying content. Additional time will be required for written assignments, which MUST be correct grammar and spelling, using complete sentences when necessary. Technical terms shall be re-quired to be familiar with by the end of studies. Successful completion of this program requires a combination of the following:
• Attending class in person
• Completing assignments, projects, labs
• Participating in class activities and discussions
• Reading your textbook material
