Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe and demonstrate the proper use of machine tools and precision measuring processes to produce parts that meet specified dimensions and tolerances using machine shop equipment.
  2. Select, inspect, and properly use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for each task, machine tool, and piece of equipment in the machine shop.
  3. Demonstrate safe operating procedures when using machine shop equipment, tools, and measuring instruments.
  4. Perform accurate measurements using appropriate precision measuring instruments and apply measurement results to verify part dimensions and tolerances.
  5. Interpret basic engineering drawings and specifications to determine required dimensions, tolerances, and measurement requirements for precision parts.

Program Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in precision measurement by accurately using, reading, and maintaining precision measuring instruments commonly used in machining and manufacturing.
  2. Apply mathematical and measurement principles to perform dimensional conversions, calculations, tolerances, and measurements using both English and metric systems.
  3. Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to determine dimensional requirements, tolerances, and measurement standards for manufactured components.
  4. Select appropriate precision measurement tools and techniques based on the required accuracy, tolerance, and characteristics of the part being measured.
  5. Demonstrate safe and professional work practices when handling precision tools, measurement equipment, and related machining equipment.
  6. Evaluate measurement results to determine whether a manufactured component meets specified dimensional and tolerance requirements.
  7. Demonstrate workplace readiness and quality awareness by applying accuracy, attention to detail, problem-solving, and continuous-improvement principles in a manufacturing environment

Instructor Policies

Cell Phone Policy - Please place Cell Phones out of sight and on mute during class so it does not disturb other students. If you must take or make a call, please step out of class to do so and return to class. While in the shop safety glasses must be worn. While operating the machines ear plugs must be worn also. No eating in the shop. While operating grinders use gloves and face shield. No horseplay, discrimination, or harassment of any kind. We will treat all people with respect and kindness. No sleeping in class.

Attendance Policy

As class attendance is crucial to making a passing grade, after 5, 7, & 9 class periods have been missed; a letter grade will be dropped after each and after 11 missed class days a failure will be recorded for the overall grade. After the class period begins, you will be counted tardy unless there is a recognized excuse. Sleeping in class will be discussed in an after class meeting with me. Class absences can also have recognized excuses, with each being handled on a one on one basis with the instructor

Additional Information

Student Success

Success is not given; It's Earned !!!  Expect to spend at least twice as many hours outside the class as you do in class studying content. Additional time will be required for written assignments, which MUST be correct grammar and spelling, using complete sentences when necessary. Technical terms shall be required to be familiar with by the end of studies.

Successful completion of this program requires a combination of the following:

  • Attending class in person
  • Completing assignments, projects, labs
  • Participating in class activities and discussions
  • Reading your text book material

MyLSCPA

Be sure to check your campus email and Course Homepage using MyLSCPA campus web portal. You can also access your grades, transcripts, academic advisors, degree progress, and other services through MyLSCPA.

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSCPA policies (Academic Dishonesty section in the Student Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

ADA Considerations

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact the Accessibility Services Coordinator, Room 119, in the Ruby Fuller Building. The phone number is (409) 984-6241.

Facility Policies

No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.

HB 2504

This syllabus is part of LSCPA's efforts to comply with Texas House Bill 2504.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect

As per Texas law and LSCPA policy, all LSCPA employees, including faculty, are required to report allegations or disclosures of child abuse or neglect to the designated authorities, which may include a local or state law enforcement agency or the Texas Department of Family Protective Services. For more information about mandatory reporting requirements, see LSCPA's Policy and Procedure Manual.

Title IX and Sexual Misconduct

LSCPA is committed to establishing and maintaining an environment that is free from all forms of sex discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual violence, and other forms of sexual misconduct. All LSCPA employees, including faculty, have the responsibility to report disclosures of sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment, sexual assault (including rape and acquaintance rape), domestic violence, dating violence, relationship violence, or stalking, to LSCPA's Title IX Coordinator, whose role is to coordinate the college's response to sexual misconduct. For more information about Title IX protections, faculty reporting responsibilities, options for confidential reporting, and the resources available for support visit LSCPA's Title IX website.
