DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTION

- Technical Studies: scales, arpeggios, walking bass lines, harmonic progression, note reading, chart reading, 'numbers', slap technique, right and left hand technique, etc.

- Style Studies: various commercial styles including but not limited to pop, rock, country, reggae, r&b, soul, funk, latin, jazz, gospel, etc.

- Melodic Studies: solo/improv concepts, jazz harmony and tension, melodic analysis

- Repertoire: rhythm/accompaniment parts and solo pieces in a variety of commercial styles

- Jury: Prepared piece to be performed at the scheduled Jury Recital date

- Study of Commercial Ensemble Songs when applicable

- Chart Reading: Traditional and Numbers - Note Reading: Bach for Bass text, Reading Contemporary Electric Bass text

All classes are cancelled on the following dates:

Labor Day - Monday, Sept. 7th

Thanksgiving - Thursday, Nov. 26th & Friday, Nov. 27th

Week 8: Midterm

Juries - TBA (Expect juries in week 15 or 16)

* Midterm may be a combination of written, aural and/or performance.

* Juries are a professional performance that will be presented in front of a panel of music faculty. You must dress accordingly and announce yourself and your piece at the front of the jury performance. A sign up sheet will be posted in the PAC leading up to the juries.

This is a 2 credit course that is required to meet 4 hours per week, one with your applied faculty plus three additional hours, exclusive of course preparation. In other words, you are expected to practice at least three hours per week in addition to your lesson.

Policies for this course are as described below: You get one 1 free absence before your lates/absences start to count against your grade in the attendance category. After that, EACH UNEXCUSED ABSENCE DEDUCTS 10% OF YOUR ATTENDANCE GRADE. Three lates = 1 absence.

Excused absences must meet the following criteria: death in the family, medical related emergency, illness with doctor's note. Any cause beyond this will be left up to instructor discretion. Excused absences will be considered on a case by case basis.

YOU MUST E-MAIL YOUR INSTRUCTOR BEFORE YOU MISS CLASS with an explanation of why you will be absent. The date and time of the e-mail will be considered. Excused absences are conditional upon this. Any deviation will be considered at the discretion of the instructor.
