Lathe: A machine tool used to produce cylindrical parts by moving a cutting tool across the surface of a rotating piece of material. An introduction to the common types of lathes. Emphasis on safety, basic parts of the lathe, nomenclature, lathe operations, machine mathematics, blueprint reading, and theory.

Explain the principal operation of a lathe

Identify and explain the functions of the parts of the lathe

Explain how lathe size is specified

Identify lathe components and controls and explain their functions.

Demonstrate safe lathe operation using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and shop safety procedures.

Set up a workpiece correctly using chucks, centers, and other work-holding devices.

Select and install cutting tools appropriate for the material and machining operation.

Calculate and set spindle speeds and feed rates for basic turning operations.

Perform basic lathe operations, including:

• Facing
• Straight turning
• Taper turning
• Drilling
• Boring
• Parting-off

Measure machined parts accurately using precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.

Produce parts within specified tolerances according to engineering drawings or job specifications.

Maintain equipment and work areas following standard shop practices.

1. Cell Phone Policy - Please place Cell Phones out of sight and on mute during class so it does not disturb other students. Let me know if you must take or make a call, then please step out of class to do so and return to class.
2. No eating in shop area.
3. Treat one another with respect, no hazing, harassing, badgering, or improper speech.
4. Turn in work on time, for every unexcused day that it is late you will be docked 5 points on that assignment.
5. Use gloves and face shield when operating grinders or handling dirty items.
6. Never use gloves on any of the other machines in the shop.
7. Safety glasses and ear plugs must be worn when operating machines.

As class attendance is crucial to making a passing grade, after 5, 7, & 9 class periods have been missed; a letter grade will be dropped after each and after 11 missed class days a failure will be recorded for the overall grade. After the class period begins, you will be counted tardy unless there is a recognized excuse.

Sleeping in class will be discussed in an after class meeting with me. Class absences can also have recognized excuses, with each being handled on a one on one basis with your instructor.

Do not forget that attendance is 20% of your grade

Student Success

Success is not given; It's Earned !!! Expect to spend at least twice as many hours outside the class as you do in class studying content. Additional time will be required for written assignments, which MUST be correct grammar and spelling, using complete sentences when necessary. Technical terms shall be re-quired to be familiar with by the end of studies. Successful completion of this program requires a combination of the following:

•    Attending class in person

•     Completing assignments, projects, labs

•     Participating in class activities and discussions

•     Reading your textbook material
