This laboratory-based course accompanies GEOL 1303, Physical Geology. Laboratory activities will cover methods used to collect and analyze earth science data.

Technology Requirements

• You must have a computer with Windows 10 or above, MacOSX 10.13 or above, ChromeOS or more recent.
• You must have a computer with a camera and microphone for proctored test taking. All tests and quizzes will be proctored with Respndus.
• You must have MS Office, specifically Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
• If you do not have Office already you can use the free version in your school email Outlook, but you must save your document to your computer and not the cloud, I cannot open those. Alternatively, you can download a free version called OpenOffice available at https://www.openoffice.org/download/
• You must have a printer with scanner OR phone with camera for the purpose of making a digital image of some lab work.

**I cannot open a .pages file, google docs, or other cloud link, and neither can Blackboard. If you do not have Word on your computer (PC or Mac), please download the free version from the link above.

• Apply knowledge of topographic maps to quantify geometrical aspects of topography.

Rules for lab work

1. Download attachment with each lab assignment. After you are finished, save as a .doc or .docx, file type for posting. Handwritten scans and pdf's will NOT be graded. (Pdf's for images you need to attach are totally cool, or you can paste your hand drawn work inside the Word document, either way is cool!) In Word, I can verify origin.
2. Do not change font style, color, or add extra lines.
3. Do not add extra blank lines; extra lines for explanations are ok.

5. If you do not understand it well enough to put in your own words, please ask me! A wise man said, if you cannot explain something in simple terms, you do not understand it. That’s where I come in. (I’m really a very nice person!)
6. Cut to the chase and answer the questions as directly and succinctly as possible. Overly lengthy answers with extras not asked for are subject to possible point loss.
7. Lab and quiz re-do's are not a thing! Do it right the first time.
8. Lab is not a group effort; this is distance learning and not everyone can meet with other class members for ‘assistance.’ I understand working in groups, but when one answer is wrong, it gets repeated across the group. This has led to a number of ugly zeros showing up!
9. If you are confused, ask me, not your equally confused classmates. There is an area in the discussion board for lab questions, from which all can benefit, or you can email me, or call me during posted phone hours.
10. Identical papers will get zeros; I do not want to hear “but we worked together…” Unique means just that. Unique. Humans have different ways of expressing themselves, so even if you work together, you should still explain things in your own words. If you cannot, see rule 5.
11. To post your lab work, click on the assignment name. This will take you to a screen where you can attach your work.
12. Any work that must be drawn MUST have your name, in ink, on the actual drawing, not in the margins. Duplicates of drawings will earn zero points! Please see assignment for where to place your name on the image in question.

WARNING

Due to the passing around of various labs in the past, there are select grossly incorrect answers which, if seen, will result in 10 points lost for those specific questions. If more than three of those grossly incorrect answers show up in one paper, the entire paper will earn 0 (zero) points without opportunity to re-do. If you get -5, it's because the answer cannot be found on the map in question, and -3 for any stream direction indicated as 'downstream' or 'upstream', or otherwise not found in the provided materials (lab book or powerpoints). If you have questions, please ask me.
