A course that introduces machining fundamentals. Use basic machine tools including the lathe, milling machine, drill press, power saw, and bench grinder. Machine terminology, theory, math, part layout, and bench work using common measuring tools. Emphasis is placed on shop safety, housekeeping, and preventative maintenance.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify and explain basic machining terminology, principles, and theories associated with common machine shop operations.
2. Demonstrate the safe and proper operation of basic machine tools, including the engine lathe, milling machine, drill press, power saw, and bench grinder.
3. Apply basic machining mathematics and measurement skills to determine dimensions, calculate measurements, and verify part specifications.
4. Read and interpret basic machining drawings and specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and machining requirements.
5. Perform basic part layout and bench work operations using appropriate hand tools, layout tools, and common measuring instruments.
6. Select and properly use common measuring tools to inspect and verify the dimensions of machined parts.
7. Demonstrate proper shop safety and housekeeping practices, including the appropriate selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
8. Perform basic preventative maintenance on machine shop equipment and identify conditions that may affect safe and efficient machine operation.
9. Demonstrate proper work habits and professional practices by maintaining an organized, clean, and safe machine shop environment.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate safe and effective machining practices while operating machine shop equipment and maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
2. Apply machining theory, terminology, mathematics, and measurement principles to basic manufacturing and machining operations.
3. Select and properly use machine tools, cutting tools, hand tools, and measuring instruments to complete basic machining tasks.
4. Interpret basic engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and specifications to determine machining and inspection requirements.
5. Produce and inspect precision machined parts using appropriate machining processes and measurement techniques.
6. Demonstrate professional workplace skills, including problem-solving, attention to detail, equipment care, preventative maintenance, and adherence to established safety and quality standards.

Cell Phone Policy - Please place Cell Phones out of sight and on mute during class so it does not disturb other students. If you must take or make a call, please step out of class to do so and return to class. While in the shop safety glasses must be worn. While operating the machines ear plugs must be worn also. No eating in the shop. While operating grinders use gloves and face shield. No horseplay, discrimination, or harassment of any kind. We will treat all people with respect and kindness. No sleeping in class.

As class attendance is crucial to making a passing grade, after 5, 7, & 9 class periods have been missed; a letter grade will be dropped after each and after 11 missed class days a failure will be recorded for the overall grade. After the class period begins, you will be counted tardy unless there is a recognized excuse. Sleeping in class will be discussed in an after class meeting with me. Class absences can also have recognized excuses, with each being handled on a one on one basis with the instructor

Student Success 

Success is not given; It's Earned !!!  Expect to spend at least twice as many hours outside the class as you do in class studying content. Additional time will be required for written assignments, which MUST be correct grammar and spelling, using complete sentences when necessary. Technical terms shall be required to be familiar with by the end of studies.

Successful completion of this program requires a combination of the following:

• Attending class in person
• Completing assignments, projects, labs 
• Participating in class activities and discussions
• Reading your text book material
